We all want to grow – it’s the way we were created. The question is how do we grow? How do we move towards that vision of growth? How do we give BIRTH to this desire to grow?
On August 13, 2012, my son Landon Todd was born. I knew to expect a few wonderful moments with my wife in the delivery room. Meeting and holding him for the first time was truly amazing. Then a moment I did not expect happened – captured in the picture below.

Love – birthed from within
This moment took my breath away, literally! I was speechless and overwhelmed with a deep sense of joy! You may not be able to read as much into the picture, so let me explain. The four children are Landon’s older siblings and this is the moment they walked up to see their new little brother for the first time. You can see the excitement on their faces – radiant!. What I saw was an instant, unconditional, unlimited Love for their new little brother.
If you would have asked me before I saw this how Landon would be received by all of his siblings – I would not have been able to answer. After seeing this, I knew Landon had been born into a family that –in an instant–had expanded (grown) its capacity to love. There was no doubt, I was just overwhelmed with the love shown on their faces.
Question: How did this instantaneous growth of ability to love happen in my children? While we have nurtured a loving family, I don’t have the power or resources to give this new capacity of love to my children. It was already in them – just as everything we have become comes from within, so did this. God has already given us this unlimited potential. It just has to be Birthed. Sometimes birth is messy, but it always leads to growth.
